How does Google work?

How does Google work?
PageRank, the solution to a math problem that changed the internet forever.

While many hopeful 'Webmasters' attempt to master social media marketing, a full understanding of Google may be more beneficial.  Social media marketing can be helpful but an in-depth understanding of the math behind the creation of Google could set you apart from the rest.

Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google, has superior math skills that enabled him to graduate from the University of Maryland, with honors, after three years.

Larry Page's infatuation with mathematics led him towards doing his doctoral thesis on the World Wide Web.  Each webpage had link forward, which were able to be followed further yet there was no way of tracing the backward links of each page.

The two teamed up to reverse the Internet's engineering to look for backlinks.  Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed an algorithm that they called PageRank.

PageRank uses numerical analysis and information retrieval.  PageRank analyzes the World Wide Web's graph.

The algorithm ranks webpages based on the number and quality of links to a webpage in order to estimate how important a webpage is.

So what does algorithm mean? An algorithm is a set of rules followed to solve a problem.

How do search engines work?
Whether you understand the information above, or not, you may still be wondering: How does Google work?

The answer to the question: How do search engines work? and how does Google work are practically the same:

When a person conducts a search...

  • Spiders aka crawlers are used to index the World Wide Web
    • Spiders fetch webpages and then follow the links they link to
  • A URL server sends lists of URLs that are to be fetched to the crawlers
  • A search engine's software searches all the keywords a person searches
    • In order to provide results, a search engine identifies how many times a keyword is mentioned in potential output webpages
  • PageRank is used to determine how important a page is
Google Keyword Ranking
The keywords on a website are critical for search engines to be able to identify a webpage.  Google's keyword ranking tools analyze the keywords in a page's title, paragraphs as well as its headings.  Keywords are also analyzed in a page's HTML tags, therefore each page must include a sufficient amount of keywords in order for Google to rank the page high.
